From Rubens and Rembrandt to Cindy Sherman by way of Renoir and Picasso, the exhibition ‘The Artist' presents 100 works from three prestigious institutions: the Nationalmuseum, the Moderna Museet, and the Konstakademien. Organised by the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, this superb exhibition examines the role of the artist through classic and contemporary works. The exhibition ranges from an exploration of the myth of the bohemian artist who goes downhill as a court painter to the fashionable entrepreneur artists in the 17th century, reflected in our day in the work of a Jeff Koons or Ernst Billgren. The lust for travel (Paul Gauguin, Ivan Aguéli) is also explored, as are artists who are considered visionaries or prophets, with more spiritual natures attached to their inner worlds… This is both original and brilliant in its conception!
