The Grand Bazaar: temple of Turkish handicrafts

The Grand Bazaar: temple of Turkish handicrafts

This colourful and bustling market of some 4,000 jewellery, carpet, knickknack, and fabric sellers is the best place to hunt for souvenirs.

Built in 1451, this huge indoor market has expanded over the centuries. Today, it forms a labyrinthine maze of vaulted passageways, with a total of 62 streets forming an inner city.

The bazaar has its own banks, baths, mosques, cafés and restaurants, a police station, and a post office, not to mention thousands of shops of golden, copper, and silver hues, illuminated dramatically to address the lack of natural light. Carry a map or use GPS to find your way to one of the 18 doors that exit the market.

In this temple of jewellers, antique dealers, fabric merchants and carpet makers, you will be dazzled by so much wealth and expertise. Before buying, take time to discuss pricing and don't hesitate to haggle... over a cup of tea, as is customary.
