Surf's up in the English Garden

The city's large public English Garden, (Englischer Garten) in the northeast of Munich, offers many activities, including surfing.

Created in the 18th century in the district of Schwabing in northeast Munich, this magnificent area of 368 hectares is one of the largest urban parks in the world, and a sanctuary for riders, picnickers, walkers, and cyclists.

Visit the artificial island in the popular southern section of the park, attend a traditional tea ceremony in the Japanese tea house, or have a pint of Bavarian lager in one of four beer gardens. You can also visit the Chinese pagoda, 25 metres high, and discover the traditional cuisine of Seehaus.

Or go surfing! Despite the sign Baden verboten, surfers train every season in the artificial watercourse the Eisbach (river of ice) fed by the glacial Isar river, which comes down from the Alps and causes a constant wave of about one metre high. The best spot to catch it is on the Himmelreich Bridge.
