The Saxon has been a veritable institution since, upon his release from prison, Nelson Mandela established residence here to write his autobiography. He could not have found a better symbol, as the hotel skilfully blends contemporary Western architecture with ethnic art. It is comfortable, warm, and unpretentious, even in the huge suite occupied by the father of the Rainbow Nation himself.
The hotel has 24 exclusive suites decorated in a subtle blend of modern and traditional African themes, with panoramic views of the garden and the city skyline. Zebra skins cover the wooden floors, and original paintings adorn the walls, including portraits of many South African leaders.
Its two restaurants serve cuisine prepared with organic seasonal ingredients. The hotel is located in a huge park with manicured lawns, a large swimming pool, and a great Spa that offers personalised treatments.
