Outspoken theatre

To appreciate Molière's language, choose the Comédie-Française. If contemporary conceptual theatre is more to your taste, opt for the Théâtre du Rond-Point.

The Comédie-Française, founded in 1680 during the reign of Louis XIV, is the quintessence of Italian theatre, lined with burgundy velvet under flamboyant crystal chandeliers. Also referred to simply as “Le Français”, this institution is a buzzing hive composed of a company and three theatres. The Salle Richelieu, an historic theatre in the Palais Royal, presents a classical repertoire (Molière, Racine, Corneille), the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier showcases foreign authors (Pirandello to Pasolini), and the Studio-Théâtre, situated in the Carrousel du Louvre, has been staging shorter, more diverse pieces since1996.

The Théâtre du Rond-Point, near the Champs-Élysées, is the work of the great set designer Patrick Dutertre, whom director Jean-Michel Ribes entrusted with the renovation, design, decoration and signage of the stages of the complex in 2001. Alongside the three rooms -Topor, Tardieu and Renault-Barrault - which openly show productions of delicious subversion, satire, and fantasy, an abundantly stocked bookshop, a tearoom, and a restaurant for dinner after the show will transform your visit to the Théâtre du Rond-Point into a truly memorable, emotional experience.
