Hotel Nemzeti Budapest – theatrical elegance

Hotel Nemzeti Budapest – theatrical elegance

The walls of the hotel still bear the mark of the National Theatre that stood next door. Ideal to dream up the classics!

Legend has it that a tunnel used to link the hotel to the old neighbouring National Theatre. Actors and actresses would have taken it for discrete trysts.

Built in 1896 in a very eclectic style, the Hotel Nemzeti (‘National') flourished along with the neighbourhood. It was one of the first to offer central heating and in the bedrooms, electric light near the bed. The bourgeoisie and the aristocracy of the time tread the Carrara marble staircase and held salons under the canopy. Now renovated, this five-star hotel has retained its beautiful facade and its elegant glass roof, under which breakfast is served.

Its 80 rooms and suites range in tone from muted to more vivid colours, combining the practical with the pleasant. Though the National Theatre moved long ago, the hotel has maintained ties with the stage, and visits backstage may be organised on request.
