The secrets of the Algarve coast can also - and best - be discovered on foot. Slip on your walking shoes and follow one of the most beautiful routes in Europe on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Why “hanging”? Because on each descent, you cross ravines above the sea, formed by very ancient river mouths. The karstic landscape you see before you is utterly unique of its kind. The walk, accessible even to novices and young children, is punctuated by masterpieces cut from stone, such as arcs, precipices, waterfalls and caves.
Start the 12 km circuit trail via Praia da Marinha, in Lagoa. This picturesque beach edged with high cliffs sets the tone: you climb the path into pine forest or garrigue (typical Mediterranean scrubland), before descending again to practically deserted stretches of sand. After Praia do Cão Raivoso, take a break not far from the village of Benagil, on Praia da Corredoura where natural arches have been gouged in the cliffs. Then continue on to Praia do Carvalho, where you will reach the sea via a tunnel that cuts through the limestone. Geology enthusiasts will be very interested to observe the many Miocene shells trapped in the rock. Your circuit ends at Praia do Vale de Centeanes, hidden between golden cliffs, where you can enjoy a well-earned refreshing swim.
