The poetically named Perfume Pagoda in the commune of Huong Son, 70 kilometres from Hanoi, has numerous temples and places of worship. It is nestled between rivers and mountains in a magnificent natural setting, and is a popular destination point for pilgrimages. Each year, people travel to the annual Perfume Pagoda (Chua Huong) festival, which starts on the sixth day of the first lunar month and lasts until the last week of the third lunar month, making it the longest holiday in Vietnam.
Traditionally, one comes to ask for happiness, prosperity, and health in the new year that is about to begin. The Perfume Pagoda is a dream and a place from which to explore the many surrounding caves. The most intense moment is in April, when thousands of pilgrims crowd the main cave, dressed in traditional costumes. Last year, Chua Huong welcomed nearly 1.4 million tourists and pilgrims during the two and a half months of the festival.
