The Coliseu (coliseum) was inaugurated in the winter of 1941, the stunning modernist building being the result of several architects, including José Port, Júlio de Brito and Cassiano Branco. Operas, ballet and music concerts used to take place in the 3000-seat arena. In 1971, the cine-studio Passos Manuel opened a more intimate venue with 300 seats dedicated to screening art films and independent programming.
The 2004 renovation is very 'Kubrick like', and while still involved in cinema, it has morphed into a bar, nightclub and concert hall. Located on the 4th floor of the Coliseu, the place is always full and is the gathering scene for alternative Porto from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Two floors are meant for dancing and a sought-after bar alternates jazz, rock and electronic music. Check the eclectic schedule on their Facebook page for concerts, exhibitions and film festivals.
