Chez Toto: a traditional bistro at the heart of the Latin Quarter

Authenticity, French tradition and simplicity are the bywords for this restaurant, which combines the feel of a bistro and a typical Lyon-style bouchon.

A favourite haunt of 16th-century workers, the bouchon is a cheery inn offering meals heavily influenced by the Lyon and Burgundy areas of France – both top spots in French gastronomy. At Chez Tonto, everything from the décor to the kitchen, tiled floor, old posters singing the regions' praises, little net curtains in the windows and its leather seats, right down to the counter, makes you feel as if you're in a traditional French bistro. The dishes on offer – prime rib in shallot butter, veal head with a gribiche or ravigote sauce, homemade Dijon-style andouillette sausages, quenelles, cervelle de canut cheese dips, snails and homemade country pâté – are indulgent and delicious. Served “à la bonne franquette”, or in a plain, homely style, the restaurant's traditional craftsmanship shines through. A chalkboard featuring daily specials and fresh fish dishes, and a fabulous wine list add the finishing touches. Foodies will love this place, which offers food that is as warm and welcoming as the surroundings themselves. It's not uncommon to see diners from different tables laughing and joking with each other and with Toto, the owner, who always comes out to greet his guests during their meal.
