Campo Santa Margherita: Venice's ‘fairground'

The Campo, symbol of the art of Venetian living, is very lively at night, courtesy of students from nearby universities.

Sometimes there's nothing better than the chance discovery of a square after stumbling up an alley, and then finding a seat on the terrace of a café, where you can linger and watch Venetian life go by.

In the morning, just like on a village central square, housewives are doing their shopping in the still-typical shops of Campo Santa Margherita, or in the colourful stalls of its small market. In the afternoon, children play football and, in the evening, students from nearby universities make it their headquarters for pre-dinner drinks. Before heading off to private parties, they remake the world at the Caffe Bar Rosso. This is the time to share a grilled panini or a plate of small fried fish with them.

In summer, under the stars, there are improvised jazz concerts, and legend has it that Chet Baker played here, hence the nearby 'Chet Bar'.
